Setting language learning goals is one thing. Making plans to help you accomplish them is a whole other ballgame. Here’s the step-by-step on what you should do.
1. Size up your language learning situation. How much do you have to learn the language? Do you have enough free time to devote to it? Can you take some amount of time off to focus on your language learning lessons?
2. Choose an approach. Which language skill do you need to focus on to accomplish your goals? That will dictate how you will approach this plan.
3. Prepare a structured learning program. A structured learning program is great for picking up new knowledge and skills. Whether you do it through a language training software, a class or some other form of graded material, this is the best avenue for exposing yourself to new topics.
4. Prepare an unstructured learning program. The more your learning progresses on any specific area, the more informal and unstructured activities play a part. Plan out how you can explore the language with fellow speakers, as well as learn more of the culture behind it.
The four steps above may sound simple, but that’s all you really need to get a plan started. Believe me, it won’t feel so “basic” once you sit down and try to work out the details. Keep in mind, your plan could contain the most important decisions you will make for getting this particular challenge handled.
